What Do You Think Of This Horse?

I’m looking for a horse to buy and a friend is selling one at our barn for $500. He’s a 4 1/2 years old registered palomino quarter horse, he’s foundation bred but at the moment doesn’t look it much.He is broke and rides nice but i was wondering if he was tall enough. He is 14.2 1/4 hands. I was wondering if he would grow anymore too or fill out more. I’m 5’3 120 lbs and would need a horse for barrel racing, team penning, endurance riding, and maybe a few western shows. Here’s some pics. I don’t have one of me riding him but where the stirrup is on him is where my leg usually is.

Here’s one without the saddle, he’s so furry lol He’s more gold colored somewhere under that winter coat.

  • I think he looks amazing! Then again ALL horses do :) And I do have a soft Spot for those beautiful gold palominos!!!! :) But really, he looks like a great horse. Nicely proportioned, nice color. He looks a little off in “widths”, but his body is going to start focusing on filling out rather then growing now, which will also give him a shiner coat, nicer hooves etc. Your size is just fine for his height. You sound like you need something with speed, which is what you should look for, you will also want something with a little controlled spirit. Take him to a track… or just a arena and ask him to run ( after worming up) and see if he’s got some speed to him. Make sure it is controllable of course and only do it if you feel safe :) I know some ponies with more speed then big long horses :) Its really their heart and build, rather then height sometimes. The price is great, just make sure he’s got what it takes for what you want :) Good luck!

  • At 4 1/2, he is not likely to grow any larger. If you feel comfortable on him and he’s healthy and sound, then $500 is reasonable. However, if you feel tall on him then listen to your instinct and look for a horse that is a better size. Otherwise, you may have difficulties bonding with him in a way that will make for a long term and mutually rewarding partnership.

  • Your weight and height will be fine for a 14.2h horse. He may fill out a bit or grow an inch but that’s going to be his max. $500 is a great deal and if he’s sound and you like him, go for it. Keep an eye on his metabolics for endurance, QH usually need more time to develop the long distance fitness.

  • hes cute. and for 500 it seems like a good deal you know him and rode him im guessing and you know his personality so if you like it you should go for it. he looks like a good size for you and he may fill out a bit more and with only being 4 1/2 he should get a tad taller as well

  • horses are a dime a dozen right now. they have even started counting how many u haul in and out at a riding campgroud i go to; because people are taking them and abandoning them during their stay at the campgrounds. i wouldn’t pay over $200 for a champion.

  • I think for $500 he probably isn’t a bad buy. You are the one who will be riding him though, so get to know him well before you make your decision. You will know best if it is worth it.

  • If hes what you’re looking for do it,$500 is a good price for him, ride him first.Hes cute:).oh yeah hes tall enough!,he might even grow a little more and fill out.

  • He is cute and thats a great price for him. If you dont buy him let me know because i would love to buy him lol.

  • He looks to be a great horse ;)

  • He’s adorable! And for 500 I would so go for it. :) You’re not to tall btw.

  • He’s a stunning little guy. I like him a lot. He looks a lot like my horse.
I have a 7 year old palomino foundation bred quarter horse gelding. He’s a barrel horse, but I also do cutting, WP, and reining with him. I only do barrel racing competitively though, the other stuff is just for variety.
I bought my horse when he was 3 and he was 14.1. Now he’s 7 and he’s about 15-15.1. He was pretty scrawny for a while, but this year he finally filled out. So there is definitely hope for the horse you’re looking at, but it depends on the height if his parents.
By the look of where the stirrup is, I’d say you fit him just fine.
If you like him, get him :)
But for endurance, I really don’t think a quarter horse will do. You see, quarter horses have bodies will with high-twitch muscles. Which means they are designed for short bursts of speeds. Horse like thoroughbreds are made up of low-twitch muscles which allows them longer periods of speeds. Endurance horses are usually arabians, thoroughbreds, mustangs, and sometimes gaited horses. Quarter horses just do not have the stamina to do well in a long distance race.

  • He won’t grow anymore at 4 1/2 yrs. On where your stirrups are, I think he’s a fine size for you (I’m 5’6 and own a 14hh mare, 15hh mare, 17hh gelding lol and consistently ride the ponies my instructor gets to sell, because she’s too big and I love the ponies). I really like him. You are the one riding him so if you really like him sure go ahead and get him. $500 is a REALLY good price.
To help enhance his gold colour when his summer coat comes through, my friend feeds her pally a piece of pumpkin softened in the microwave in his feed once a week (if he doesn’t like it squish it up and mix it around in his feed), it really works, he comes through a LOVELY rich golden colour.
(PS: In regards to your name question, I have one to add but Y!A won’t let me edit. Charlie! The pony I’m currently riding for my instructor is a pally and that was his former name, they should have kept it lol, really matches him.)
